about

What follows are the original notes:

Concept:

Over the course of my academic career I have found that with each new technique or skill I learned I felt an immediate and obligatory need to put it into use in my compositions. That immediate use of a new skill did not further my creative process but instead lead me to produce a mediocre piece that did not exemplify the artistic expression of that technique. I realized that hastily putting a new compositional technique into a piece was more of a hindrance than helpful for my learning process. For "Limited Music" I made the effort to restrict an aspect of my compositional process. In these works, I restricted the use of harmonic content; more specifically to triads. While I was intrigued at this thought of only using limited harmonies I realized that the work would face the inevitability of being extremely static. It was then that I concluded that I would need to add to my restrictions. From here I added ‘tones’ that would not have a direct relationship to the chords in use. Instead, their presence would serve to enrich the overall harmonic content. Their charter and timbre would be treated differently, these tones are to heard as a separate identity from the chords.

Timbre and Form:

The very the act of limiting one element of composition leads to a liberation of another. I have long been intrigued by the effects of timbre not only a single chord but also an entire harmony. In each of these works each chord and tone were subject of extreme focus on timbre. With such an incense process on each individual sound I have attempted to achieve a new element of expression that is not dependent on the conventions of harmonic movement and phrasing. From meticulous manipulation of timbre, I was able to conceive of an appropriate form for each movement.

The recordings presented here are the original compositions with only minor equalization/mastering applied.
